========== WRITTEN TEST ==========

It was midday in Aandalust city, and the guild hall of the researchers guild was abuzz with the hustle and bustle of recruitment. While many of the teams seemed to be causing a ruckus, one team of recruits seemed to be going out of their way not to be noticed. A young Cinnicino in a dirty long lab coat was walking irregularly in the shadows. She was being followed by a very gruff looking pamcham in a ragged formal hat, some surgical scars could be seen on his body.

The Cinnicino said with an almost giddy tone, “Come, come, Fritz.  Let us see if zey have any interesting materials vorth using in our vork. You might have to carry a few zings.”

The pancham nodded and awnsered in a deep baritone, “Yes, doctor.”

However as they made their way to through the main hall, a large crowd seemed to pop up, blocking their way.  They were all chatting amongst themselves about whatever was going on at the time.  The doctor said, “Fritz, if you vould be so kind as to make us a path.”

As Fritz began to crack his knuckles the group began grumbling and snapping irritably. It seemed that there was someone else making their way through as well. It was a tall flygon, accidentally sending some of the crowd flying with her tail. Trying to be polite; she said, "Ohhh... Excuse me, pardon me, Leader's Assistant comin' through...” Turning she sent a trubbish flying with her wings.   She cried out, “C'mon guys, can’t you have your little meeting thing somewhere that isn't blocking a hallway? 'scuse me, sorry, jeez!"

When she had finally made her way out, the two saw that her arms were laden with a surprisingly large pile of thick paper scrolls. A large blueprints tube was strapped to her back, the strap crossing her chest diagonally and connecting with a metal clasp, while her wrists bore one gleaming armband each; silver worn on the right, and black worn on the left.

After clearing the crowd the flygon attempted to step forward with confidence. However with one quick misstep she was falling forward, sending the papers all over. There were a few chuckles coming from the crowd, but all of the sudden the doctor stepped forward and gave them all a withering gaze.  With that Fritz helped the dragon up and began picking up the papers with her.

"Oooof, so many papers... There we go," the Flygon muttered, balancing every piece she was given back into a manageable pile before she straightened and broke out into a cheery smile. "Thanks so much for helping me pick all these up. I swear, that’s like the fifth time I’ve tripped today; I’m such a klutz…" She blinked."Heeeey, wait a minute. You don't look familiar. Are you visiting the Guild?"

The doctor giggled with a theatrical shrug, “Yes ve are fisiting zis fine establishment so that ve may join in zis guilds endevors.”

"Well no wonder I don’t remember you, you're new!" She inclined her long neck in the best bow she can manage without dropping everything all over again. "Welcome to the Researchers Guild! I'm Kali, I'm one of the Guild Leaders' assistants here. Pleased to meet you! And you are…?"

The Cinnicino did a slight courtesy, “I am Dr. Emilia Von Strauss, newly arrived in zis fine city. You may call me Emily if you vish.  The one who has been helping you with your papers is my humble assistant Fritz.”

Fritz gave a formal bow, “The doctor helped put me together.” Emily shushed him for saying that.

She smiled again, "Nice names! You don't hear many like that around here, but then again Andalusst is kind of a mish-mash of a whole bunch of different kinds of names. It's always nice to hear 'em since Pokémon do tend to come in from all over the place, after all. And speaking of which, did you guys get here from the fog or something?"

Fritz gave his boss a nervous look, letting his claws loose slightly.  Emily shook her head, they had to keep up appearances while they were here.  Turning back to Kali she said, “We did have quite a time getting here if that’s what you mean. We nearly lost all of our lab equipment a few times in that mist that seems to envelope this area.”

Kali arched an eyebrow, "Really? Hmm, yeah, that's how it is for a few people around here. I'm not an Andalusst native myself, but I figured I'd stick around. Anyway, now that you're here and you've been registered as a team, what name did you pick?" She then stood expectantly, waiting for an answer.

“We are going with Mad Science,” Said Fritz with a shy grin.  This seemed to make the flygon giggle for some reason.

All of the sudden, Emily charged forward and shouted with manic look in her eyes, “Laugh if you vill, but have you never vanted to find out the inner secrets of zis vorld for yourself?” Throwing her hands up in the air, “Vere vould vee be if no one tried to do zee unexpected? Have your never vanted to look beyond zee clouds und zee stars, or to know what causes zee trees to bloom und grow?!”  All this shouting seemed to cause those in the room to stare intently at Emily, causing her to blush.  In a more quiet tone she said, “But if you talk like zat, others vill call you mad. Well, if I could discover just a few of these things through my research. What eternity for our species truly is, for example.  Why some of us become ghost and others are never seen again. I vouldn't care if they did zink I was mad!”

Kali said with an audible gulp, "Wow, that's so much better than the name I used when I signed up, wow. I was kind of, uh, young and silly back then; I guess you could say, so the name I used was... yeeeeaaaaah, pretty bad."

Before either Fritz or Emily was given a chance to talk again Kali asked, "So what's your reason for joining the Guild, anyway? There are three guilds here in Andalusst, and even if I like it here with the Researchers, I know it's not the best fit for everyone since we're kinda knowledge-oriented; you could've just as easily registered with the Hunters, or the Explorers. So why here?"

For a moment the two huddled together. Afterwards Emily came forwards and chuckled, “To put it simply, zis guild is zee one zat will give me funding to do what I do best, research! Zoes explorers may be trying to do good but to be frank, they are not zat astute.” She then lifted where her left leg should have been from her lab coat, revealing a peg leg, “Also until I get used to zis, I wouldn’t be able to explore very far.”

Fritz then chimed in, “Hunters give me a bad feeling.”

Kali listened quite intently to their answer, her earlier cheerful expression became one of thoughtful consideration. She waited patiently for them to wrap up, before speaking again. She said with a raised eye ridge, "Wow, that's quite a tale! Not many Pokémon come through here with a story like that. Though it seems that isn't the complete story. Oh well, seems like everyone in the Guilds has a driving force behind what they do, and some reasons are... well, better than others."

She paused, before her voice regains its chipper tone. With a curious smirk she asked, "So that’s the "why" and the "how"; what about the "what"? What do you think made the Guild decide to accept you into the ranks?"

“Fritz here is not exactly zee talkative type, but he has an attention to detail and strength zat make him zee perfect assistant and bodyguard,” Emily giggled.

Fritz chimed in, “The doctor is brilliant, but she is no pushover.”

"Oh wow, that's pretty cool! You guys are lucky. Y'know sometimes I wish I had a better skill set like that; then maybe I’d be more help to the Guild. Pretty much the only things I do around here are draw and deliver papers everywhere and, well, get stuck helping Archie."

Emily raised an eyebrow,”I take it zis Archie is someone who gives you a lot of grief zen?” She placed a paw on the earth dragon’s leg, attempting to be comforting.

Kali’s voice seemed to carry a twinge of venom when she talks about this Archie. She groaned,  "I mean yeah sure he's one of the Guild Leaders, but he's just so... so... annoying, always bossing people around and taking credit for everything and acting like he's so much smarter than everyone else. And I'm always the one having to put up with him since someone has to help him but everyone else always runs off before they get stuck with him instead!"

Kali let out a great huff of frustration, glancing away for a moment before she remembered had an audience.  She gave an embarrassed chuckle as her face slowly reddens, she says, "And oh gosh, there I go running my mouth, ahaha! Sorry, I'm not talking too much or anything, am I? I kind of have a tendency to ramble on sometimes... And I probably really shouldn’t be bad-mouthing Archimedes...”

Emily winked, “Zere’s someone like zat in every group of Pokémon like us. I won’t say anything.”

With a sudden, panicked expression abruptly crossed her face as she remembered the mass of paper in her arms, she blurts, "And OH MY GOSH I still need to take care of these!"

She started running down the hall, and then abruptly pulled an about-face - accidentally whacking another passerby with her tail while doing so - to stammer, "Uh, it was nice meeting you! I'll, er, see you later, I hope?" She attempted to raise an arm to wave back, but stops when the paper pile in her arms wobbles precariously, and instead flashes a quick grin before stomping briskly away.

Fritz turned to his boss with a smile, “That went well.”

“Zat it did, now come along, we still have to find zee storeroom.” Emily chuckled and began to walk away. There was a look in her eyes that she had an idea for a new experiment.

The pancham sighed, and marched off into the shadows. Their work in Aandalust had only just begun.
